Workshop programme and a bit more about Make it Personal

Hello!

The workshop programme has been live for nearly a week now and is filling up nicely – thank you …  I am very excited and so looking forward to them starting in June. A couple have nearly sold out, so I will be looking to see if I can juggle things a little and possibly re-run them.

I have however had a few people feedback that paying for the whole year of Make it Personal up front is prohibitive for them – which I can understand. So I have decided to offer a staged payment option for the course – which will be 4 payments of £180 … one on booking, and then one in Aug, Nov and Feb (trying to avoid Xmas!). I hope that will help.

I would still like your commitment to the years course though – as it is designed so that each session builds on all those before to really help you find your own language and voice as an artist. I have run it before with some people doing the whole course and others dropping in and out of some sessions and I felt that although we had a great year, it meant that a lot of re-tracking had to be done each time for those coming in new and the year long course became disjointed as a result.  I think by keeping the same group working together and progressing we will be able to develop each of you much more individually and effectively – I hope that makes sense to you.

The first year will add up to being a very comprehensive study of multiple surface design techniques – always geared towards a personal interpretation and giving students a huge variety of ways to work into their themes and develop materials and ideas.

We will cover stamps (inclusing lino cuts, blocks and foam stamps), stencils, monoprinting, gelli printing, rubbings, resist and soy wax resist, screen pringing, thermofax printing all using a variety fo bases (fabrcis and papers) and a variety of media (gelatos, crayons, pencilss, fabric paint, dyes, dabbers, wax, molding paste and appliglue). Virtually all materials will be provided for this - you just need to turn up! -Examples of these are in the images in this post

This will be followed in year 2 (this will be in the next programme for 2018/19) with an equally comprehensive study of the elements and principles of design, again directed towards personal preferences. As we study each area of design we will make pieces of work to practice application and leaqrn construction techniques and skills. Students will complete the year by designing and making one (or more) large pieces of work, using all the skill learnt during the previous months. If students wish – I will arrange a gallery showing for these at one of the major textile shows

I hope that explains a bit more about the course and why I need a longer term commitment for you for this particular workshop.
I will of course, contact all those already booked on the course to offer the same payment options!!

If it is useful, I can post blog posta about some of the other workshops to give you a better idea what will be covered? Or I could do some video examples?

Workshops Version 2!!

I should have known I would need to change it! Following requests for weekend courses I have added one of the Make it Personal course as a Saturday option and also added some weekend workshops for those who work during the week. The picture above is of my own sketch books - and is the sort of thing we will be doing as part of Make it Personal

So here is the new programme - I will remove the other so we cant get mixed up. Happy to send  pdf or word file for you - just email - hilarybeattie@ntlworld.com

Hope to see some of you here - Hilary x

Year long courses:
Make it Personal
These courses are designed to help you find your own voice as an artist, initially through the preparation of materials in year 1 and then in year 2 (will follow in 2018/19) studying design techniques and principles to utilise these materials. In order to achieve this it is important that we build a good relationship between tutor and student and also that you learn the full variety of techniques.  For this reason these courses are only available as block booking for the whole course
Please note there are 2 versions of this course running both running for 12 days: One is for 2 days every other month (roughly) to enable those farther away to travel. The other is for 1 day a month. I have listed the bi-monthly ones in blue to avoid confusion
Please also note that the day a month course is running twice – once as a weekday option and once as a Saturday option for those that work. I have listed the Sat options in red – again to avoid confusion!

Mentoring Days
These are days that you can utilise as you wish. You can book a few or more! and work with me for several months on a project you have planned, or book just one maybe to gain advice and help for a specific sticking point in your work or to learn a new technique. We can cover any of the techniques I teach and you will receive tuition and guidance to enable your development as an artist

Wed 3rd                                              Mentoring Day 7
Sat 6th and Sun 7th                                        Create your own sketchbooks and colouring books for 2018
You have probably noticed the craze for adult colouring books and their promotion as relaxation/mindfulness tools. Well that is because colouring and creating are good for us - as long as we take away expectations and demands for perfection. In this lovely weekend course you will work to set yourself up with at least two books to play and colour in this year. We will use a mix of papers and fabrics and look at variety of binding methods – including a ‘wiro’ bind for which I have the machine! We will then use your choice from the gelli plate, stencils, stamps or wood blocks to set up pages for further play during the year. You could make your books themed (eg a garden or holiday journal) or general – or both! No more ‘precious’ empty books on shelves - just lots of well loved, colourful and inspiring play books
NB – this course is a shortened version of the three day workshop, especially for those who can only come at weekends. We will not be able to look at as many design ideas for filling your books and you may make less books – but we will still pack loads in!

Cancellations:
I realise that sometimes students have to cancel and want to do the best I can to accommodate that. So I have a very simple cancellation policy: If I can refill your place then you will get a full refund no matter when you cancel. If I can’t then no refund will be given – no matter when you cancel. I hope that seems fair to us all!
Payment:
All courses are paid for in advance at the time of booking – including the full amount for the longer courses. I know this may seem harsh – but I have pondered long and hard and any other way is just not practical for me. Courses can be purchased via my online shop: www.hilarybshop.co.uk or via email to: hilarybeattie@ntlworld.com.
New Workshops:
I will be adding new workshops to the 2018 programme as I see which courses are most popular.                         I will also run a waiting list for each workshop if it is oversubscribed
And I will try to re-run any courses that book up fast – but my time is stretched very tightly so I can’t guarantee this. The only way to be certain of attending a workshop is to book it!
More workshop information and any requirements lists will be sent out at least 2 months before the workshop together with a list of possible places to stay. Any queries please email me at hilarybeattie@ntlworld.com
Hope to see you here in sunny Wales!! – Hilary x
